New Year's Resolutions

So far two ideas have come to mind.

and

Joy -- I want to find Joy in all that I do and in all that is around me. It is a state of mind. I am often happy or sad. But Being Joyful just sounds like a good way to live.

Faith -- I do have Faith and don't think of it as faltering. I do live my life as a good Christian but we all have room for improvement. I do plan to return to spending more time "reading about my faith" and "talking to Jesus".

I know many people do not make New Year Resolutions or set Goals. They feel that these set them up for failure. But in order to improve ourselves and our walk with the Lord we do need to have a plan. So maybe we could call them "Plans for the New Year".

Preparing for the New Year

When I first started this blog, I did so to help me keep my house picked up and neat and as a way to log life in my home. Mostly for memories for myself and my children.

Did I succeed? In some ways, yes. In some ways, no. There are so many beautiful blogs out there to read and inspire me in my daily life. I spend way too much time reading blogs and too little time on my home and family. So, I am deciding what I plan to do in the new year.

I have thought about closing this blog and only updating the other one "Sew at Home on Pine Ridge". But I think I'll go ahead and keep both of them going and updating when I have some news or something to say. Something important in our lives or something I want to record in writing for my children and, hopefully some day, grandchildren.

As I go about my day today, I am going to think about the new year coming up and make some goals (resolutions). I also plan to look over last year's and see how successful I was with them.

So, how about you? Do you set goals for each new year or are you successful just being and doing?

I am joining Chari at Happy to Design for Sunday Favorites where we revisit a previous post and to Spiritual Sunday.

I have found this week that the Lord works in mysterious ways to pull us in and ask us to take the time to praise Him, ask for His forgiveness, and just generally cause us to think about Him and all He has given us.

Yesterday morning, as I was golfing (on the WII), was one of those moments and I experienced one of those little pulls he often gives me.

I looked up and the sun was streaming through my window focusing on this . . .

Christmas Vignettes

Today I am sharing one of my Christmas groupings. I'm linking to Southern Hospitality for the Holiday Home tour.

I started out with an old chair that didn't have a seat. I put a couple of green bushes on it and added a couple of red poinsettia bushes. Normally, I would have used Christmas garland but I already had this greenery on it from my fall decorations and just decided to leave it and add poinsettias.

The snowman pair I purchased in Branson, MO last winter. Don't you just love the glitter?

Isn't this the cutest wreath. It is made of wire. I received from one of my students about seven years ago. Each year I hang it in a different spot. This spot was calling it this year. I added the red bow to give it a Christmas look. That reminds me when I first go it, I let it out year long. I think I'll take the red bow off after Christmas and keep it out again this year.

It really is easy to take something that most would consider junk and turn it into a great Christmas display.

Santa's Play Land

Santa's Play Land is set up on my Fireplace Hearth. I guess you could say it it at the North Pole.

Even Santa is reminded of the reason for the season by this wall hanging. See the creche and the star by the "e".

The elves live at the edge of the forest and are really the ones who keep watch over the village.

This is the reindeer keeper's home. Doesn't he have a quaint little place. (He does share it with the rest of the stable workers.)

The barn. We have to keep the animals happy.

And the stable workers.

The reindeer have their own home. Look they even have their names above the window.

Santa's Solider Factory? They're really not soldiers--we want them to feel important as they go about making all of the toys for the good boys and girls and parents.

Santa and Mrs. Claus have an enchanted cottage closer to the main village. Mrs. Claus has to be in the middle of things, you know.

Chores must be done but they are a joy because everyone likes what they do in this town.

Shhhhhh! School is in session.

Everyone wants to live in Santa Land so we have two schools.

Ooops. Someone forgot to tell these little ones that recess is over.

The police keep the town in order. (They have a really cushy job.)

But . . . they are really serious about their job. Can't you tell?

Don't be fooled by the antiquated fire truck. It does the job.

Oh no! It's time to go.

Oh my! What are Santa and Frosty up to now.

Tabletop Tuesday

Usually I put my Christmas village in the Library/Office. But, we really don't use it very much so this year I decided to find a place in the living room. I had too many to put in one place so I made one display on my fireplace hearth (I'll show that to you later) and one on the side table in the dining room.

The only way to reach "Pleasant Hill" is to arrive by train. And this little train doesn't run very often.

But once you get there, there's plenty of shopping.

And a place to sit down to check your email or favorite blogs when you tire.

And don't forget to take a sleigh ride through the white and drifted snow.

Your kids will love to walk over the bridge and play in the snow.

But, you'll have to watch out for this little guy. He can cause problems. . .

A little more shopping.

Don't forget the tree.

The maid will have the house clean and hot chocolate waiting. And oh, she'll put the tree up also.

So come on over for a visit. You'll love "Pleasant Hill".

Many people fuss about Christmas decorations and shopping starting earlier each year. Many say the holiday is becoming too commercial. I say it is all what you make of it and what it means to each person.

I always put my decorations out early. Either the day after Thanksgiving if not before. Why? Because to me the holiday decorations are a sign of joy, peace, love, and hope.

Love . . .

Hope . . .

As we await for our most loved Savior.

Outdoor Wednesday

This past weekend Larry, Kelsey, Ismael, and I went to Silver Dollar City in Branson, MO. Branson is a tourist town about 3 hours from our home. The drive was beautiful and the weather was brisk.

Every year I say I want to go see the amusement park decorated for Christmas with all of the lights and Christmas trees.

I have to say I was not disappointed.

Larry and the kids rode lots of rides (roller coasters) while I looked around in the shops. I rode one roller coaster and it jarred me and made my head hurt so I didn't bother with any of the other ones. My favorite rides are the water rides but it was way to cold to have them running in November.

Here we are in Grandpa's Mansion trying to stand up straight in the slant room.

We stood in line to ride on the train that runs through the property and was able to get on the train just as it was getting dark. They had a lot of beautiful lights up. But my favorite (and most surprising) part of the train ride was when we stopped and all lights were turned off. Then grandpa told us the story of Jesus' birth. As he told the story lights were turned on to reveal the nativity. It was very touching and I have since considered that there are thousands of people that visit the park every year and wonder how many hear the story for the first time.

We had a great day. The worst part was driving home on unfamiliar roads in the dark.

Show and Tell Friday

I have a mailbox that my father made me at least 10 years ago. I change the flowers on it 4 or 5 times a year to match the holiday decorations.

Even though I love the fall colors that I used, I look forward to a couple of weeks from now when I change them for the Christmas season. It's the most wonderful time of the year.

Fall Mantle

Last January when I was taking my winter decorations down, I just couldn't give up seeing my white glazed 3 piece nativity. So I decided to leave it out all year with the intentions of moving it to a different spot in the house every couple of months.

I did leave it out, but it has stayed on my mantle all year. I just changed the flowers and other accessories as the seasons changed.

The nativity has served its purpose which was to get me to slow down and think about my life and be thankful. I do believe I it may have earned a permanent place in my living room.

Fall Decorations

Not a lot going on around here today. I spent the weekend cleaning my kitchen. I mean deep cleaning my kitchen. I do this every year about this time to get ready for my Christmas decorating. But it is still a little early for that so I thought I would share my fall decorations with you over the next couple of days.

I rescued this old chair from somewhere, not sure where. It had a cane braided seat made of jute. Needless to say what was left of it was rotted and would not hold anything. So, I stapled some of the breathable, black ground covering that is used as a weed barrier for plants and made kind of a bowl. Then I put some potting soil in it and planted some annuals. It was pretty for a year or two and then the black covering started to rot so I ripped it off and put the chair away in the garage. After I took down the Christmas decorations last year, the house seemed bare so I went off on a scavenger hunt (to the outer garage) and dug this chair out. Since then, I have changed flowers with the seasons.

I've kept the same greenery and changed the flowers for Valentines, Easter, and now Fall decor. I can't wait to see what I come up with for Christmas.

It actually hides the vent well. This picture was taken down low but as you walk, it is not noticeable.

My original plan was to put a wooden seat to sit decorations on and I may still do that. But for now, I like the eclectic look I get from it as it is.

It sure has been a long time since I have posted. I have no excuse except I am sewing more and reading blogs less. But my favorite time of the year is coming up and I can't wait to participate in all of the great holiday blog parties and check out everyone's Christmas decorations.

What is That?

For the past couple of days, my husband and I have heard some odd rustling sounds while out on our patio. We decided that it was just the leaves blowing in the trees or across the yard.

This morning I was sitting at a table, that is not under the the patio, and heard the same rustling sound. I looked up and this is what I saw.

We have buzzards flying around our house all of the time. I guess it is because the city lake is below the ridge and there is a forest between us and the lake. I like to watch them swoop down for food. Shooting buzzards is not allowed in Arkansas.

We'll definitely have to think this one over.

Rooster Party Time

It is hard for me to get good photographs of my roosters because my kitchen is painted red and I did not want to take them down from the top of the kitchen cabinets.

Meet the "Rule of the Roost"

This looks like an oil painting. But, of course it isn't.

Part of the tail feathers of this rooster are made of painted tin. A closeup is below.

This is the noisy one.

He just seems to be crowing all of the time.

These little guys are behind the times. It really is after 5 p.m.

The plate was given to me by a friend after I attended a very special church retreat. De Colores means "The Colors".

This one is only one of my favorite roosters from a group of nine. The rest are below.

This is a wall hanging that I made about 2 years ago. This is not a panel. It is actually my first attempt at machine applique. Each rooster is appliqued with many pieces of fabric. It was appliqued onto a piece of chicken wire fabric. I then quilted over each of the wire sections with a micro filament thread (invisible). This quilt took many, many hours but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I saw the quilt at the Dallas Quilt Show a few years ago and fell in love with it. After thinking about it for hours, I decided to purchase a kit with the patterns and fabric swatches for the roosters. (The only quilting kit I have every purchased.) I also purchased the chicken wire fabric. The rest of the fabric bordering the blocks were from my meager stash.

Rocking Chair Make Over

See this rocking chair. Craig just looked at it and said, "Why, Mom!"

Well, It's not much to look at. A little on the wobbly side and the cushion old fashioned and very faded. So Craig's question was really, "What are you going to do with that hideous thing."

Well, first I took off the cushions.

There, that's better already! Then Larry re-glued one of the arms to make the chair stronger. Next he sanded it lightly and added coat after coat after coat of white spray paint.

Much better. Now, if I was going to keep this in my home, I probably would have recovered the cushions in a toile fabric. But, this chair is going to be a "reading chair" in my classroom. So, I picked this colorful upholstery fabric to make any child look forward to having a turn in the reading chair.

Oops, I need to add the ties to the back cushions to make it hang correctly. I have another white chair in the classroom that is covered in a fish fabric (last year's theme) that I will recover with this fabric. I also have a little chest that is royal blue with fish fabric on the lid. That will be recovered with this plaid fabric also.

Show and Tell Friday

It has been longer than I thought since I have posted. I have been working on a lot of school stuff. Not very exciting stuff for non teachers.

I wanted to show you my two little teacups that I purchased for a couple of dollars each last fall.

I actually purchased them to make pin cushions. But I decided they matched this picture. So they sit on a dresser under the picture.

Life Gets in the Way

I love summer. It is a carefree time for me with very few deadlines and not caring what day it is. Being a teacher, I am suppose to be off during the summer. Well, that's the rumor about teachers you know.

I had lots of plans this summer -- getting the house dejunked and spotless (not accomplished), lots of sewing (not accomplished), plenty or rest (I'm getting there), and so on.

But life gets in the way . . .

Clearly the forerunner has been doing Science and Social Studies lesson plans. These are often the subjects the kids look forward to everyday so I try to do a lot of hands on projects and experiements. But look at the mess I make while preparing. Scary isn't it. My husband and kids steer clear. (They probably think I'm crazy.)

But, I have had fun thrown in also.

Doesn't that look like fun. I had my great nieces visiting for the week. (The 1st and 3rd ones from the left.) We had friends over a couple of evenings. What a relaxing way to end a day.

Sitting under the trees where the Buffalo and White Rivers meet, reading a great young adult novel (have to read the books I want my students to read) and not even realizing when my husband is washed down the creek a few hundred feet from the pull of the current. (It was his fault, he is the one who decided to try to walk across. Better fishing spot you know. He'll never know, he didn't quite make it.)

I'm off to Fort Smith today (an hours drive) to the teacher supply store and to run a few errands. Then I really need to return home and start the housework. We'll see.

I can't complain. Summer is good.

Home Again and Outdoor Wednesday

Larry and I just returned from a short trip to north central Arkansas. I had a teacher's workshop in Searcy and then we traveled to Mountain Home for a little rest and relaxation. We stayed here . . .

It was a great little park with a chance to go canoeing and kayaking, rent boats for trout fishing, or even have a guided fishing trip. We set up our RV in this area.

It was an open field backed by a row of trees and the Buffalo River. It was pretty hot during our stay so we didn't sit and enjoy the outdoors as much as we usually do. But, when we walked down the path to this little area . . .

It was like someone turned on the air conditioner. When you reached a certain point going down the path, a fresh really cool air hit you in the face and it was noticeably cooler. You could feel the cold air off of the river. Then when a cool breeze blew, it actually got chilly. For me, that is. I think all of the fishermen thought they were in heaven.

The river was flowing like this the whole time we were there.

The fog rolled in all hours of the day depending on the rain showers we had.

There were railroad tracks about 100 yards away. Imagine waking up to a very loud noise and not having a clue what was going on. We had crossed the tracks to get to the resort but figured they were probably not used any longer. We definitely found out they were--a couple times each night.

Very little cell phone coverage. I could walk out about 50 yards into the open field and text my kids. But, I couldn't call out. Although, I could get their texts inside the RV. The last night we were there, it poured off and on all night. I mean poured. We had a 5 gallon bucket sitting outside and when we got up, it was almost half full. From just one night of rain. But it cleared off and we were able to pack up and be on our way as planned.

It was a great place to stay. Although, it was hard not being able to keep up with the kids and having that little thought that if they had an emergency, they may not be able to get in touch with us.

I think Larry really enjoyed the tranquility of it all.

What a life!!!!

Tabletop Tuesday

Marty at A Stroll Thru Life hosts Tabletop Tuesday each week. She always has the most beautiful vignettes in her home.

I found a massive (heavy) candelabra at a local antique shop last Saturday. After trying it in several different spots, I decided on the side table in my dining room.

Cruise -- Part 3

Things to do, continued . . .

There were shows each night by a cast of dancers.

A ventriloquist.

A juggler. This guy was so funny.

A comedian followed him, but most people enjoyed the juggler much more.

The ship had 3 or 4 jewelry stores and they stayed pretty busy. Prices ranged from $10 to hundreds of dollars.

A casino.

Basketball and volleyball.

A piano bar. I so wanted Kelsey to be able to sit down and play "Clocks" on that piano. But, I didn't really think they would let her. She says she's going to have one of those one day. I hope she does.

They had dance classes, a spa (pretty expensive), a gym, a coffee shop, karaoke, and the list goes on. There was a room for children, pre-teens, and teens with activities planned for most of the day. Parents were able to drop the children off at any time and pick them up whenever they wanted to. They had teen dances, etc. in the evening. Some started at midnight. I bet the teens loved this because they were able to stay up all hours of the night.

To sum it up . . . there was something for everyone.

Cruise Part 2

Let's see. What to show and tell today?

Things to do!

This place was always too crowded for me. And it was really hot. I usually checked out the shady, cool areas.

If I knew how to play chess, I would have. This was in a cool, shady area. I really need to find where I can purchase these chess pieces. We have a concrete chess board in our back yard.

Now, I do love to play putt putt golf. I'm not sure why I didn't take time to play. This small course was on the top and front of the boat. And oh my, it was very windy. Some days, I could hardly stand up.

Food was available 24 hours a day. This is the formal dining room. Although we only had to dress formally on one evening. There were 4 or 5 different buffet areas on the Liddo deck. Breakfast was served from 6:30 to 11:00. You could get traditional breakfast foods, pastries, or omelets.

Then you could get burgers, hot dogs, chicken strips, etc. from one line. Another line had fish, some type of chicken or beef. It was more of an American food line with steamed veggies, diced potatoes, etc. A pizza line was open 24 hours a day. The kids like it. I had one piece and was not overly impressed. There were too many other things to choose from.

Another line had a Mongolian buffet. You took a bowl and added the veggies you wanted, handed your bowl to the chef, and he cooked it in a WOK. You had a choice of shrimp, chicken, or beef, or you could get a combo. There was also a choice of three sauces. I cannot believe that I didn't discover this buffet until the last day. Otherwise, it would have been my daily choice. I should have known whatever was served there was great because it always had long lines.

There was also a salad line daily. And the kids favorite. Ice cream. All day, every day. You could even call room service for ice cream. What more could you ask for?

During our formal dinner, each night at 6 pm, we sat with the same family each night and had the same wait staff. Each evening we chose whatever we wanted from a menu. We usually chose an appetizer, from a choice of 6-8 items and a main entree, from a choice of 8-10 items. Although, you could choose as many of each as you wanted. Then when we were finished with the meal, they brought out a dessert menu. Here again, we had a choice of 5 or 6 desserts. Here is my favorite.

The melting pot cake. Oh my gosh. It was so very rich that I could not eat it all. And the serving was not that big.

This was probably one of my favorite meals. Lobster and shrimp served with broccoli and potatoes. Yummy!

Thanks to Kelsey, I could do a whole post on food. She was the food photographer. But, I am too lazy to start over. So, I'll continue on food and things to do tomorrow.

It's getting late so I'm going to put in a movie and work on some applique for a bit. Until tomorrow . . .

Cruise Highlights -- Part One

I felt so rested while I was gone but now that I am home, I feel like I have little energy. It could be that 100 degree temps are taking their toll on everyone.

We left for our cruise on Sunday morning driving to Mobile, Alabama. The trip was a little over 10 hours but just about the whole time was interstate driving. Going through Lake Providence, LA on US Highway 65 was one of my favorite places. I thought I took a picture, but I guess I didn't. The interstate changed into a 2 lane highway that ran parallel to the Lake. It seemed so peaceful--like a lazy little town.

We spent the night in Mobile, AL just a few minutes from the port. Our hotel was close to a small creek that had alligators in it.

I know Louisianans are probably used to this, but it was a novelty to us. Of course we gawked and took pictures.

We checked in at the port around noon on Monday and was on the ship by a little after 1 p.m. It wasn't too bad waiting in line. We all went ahead and got passports even though the cruise lines still accept a photo id and birth certificate. In the next year or so, I think passport books or cards will be required. When we left the ship and returned, we had to show our ship card and a photo id.

One of the two pools. This was the most popular, especially with the children and pre teens. I found it too crowded. In fact, I don't any of us got in the pools during the cruise.

I thought these stairs were beautiful. It was very hard to get a good photo because of the lighting. There were photographers everywhere taking photos. They then printed them out and put them up on display and passengers could purchase the ones they wanted. The pictures were $11 for a 5" x 7" and $22 for an 8"x10". I assume they made a lot of money because people were standing in line to pay all day everyday.

I am generally not fond of storms. But, I can weather the thunder and lightning better than the wind. We live on top of a ridge and what seems to be a low winds on flat land are often high winds here.

Monday morning, I was giving my vehicle a thorough cleaning on the inside when some high winds came up. I shut my doors, grabbed all of the floor mats, etc and put them under the patio and headed indoors. In a few minutes I looked out the window and here is the awesome sight I encountered.

I stood inside the door and watched the clouds. They changed quickly and the little storm rolled through in about 15 minutes. Out of those wondrous clouds, we got a few drops of rain. I guess they emptied out somewhere else.

I do believe we are in for a hot, dry summer here in Arkansas. The temps have already reached the upper 90's on at least 4 or 5 days already this month. We generally don't have these extreme temps until July.

I decided to show my simple dining room table as it looks today. I just finished this patriotic quilt and wanted to show it off. I don't have very much red, white, and blue around the house but I did find these red and white candles I used at Christmas and these red party thingies (don't know what you call them) from Valentines Day.

Chair Make Over

Painted the chair with bronze spray paint.

Signs of Summer

About a month ago, I made 6 flower pots to put on my back patio and around the pool. Here they are when I planted them.

I am so happy they have really taken off and grown. A few of the flowers died and I will probably replace them if they have left bare spots. But I am thrilled they are still alive and looking good.

Oops, there are some dead marigolds I need to pull up and replace. I can't decide if they are getting too much water or not enough. Any suggestions?

Edited to Add: I had this post in "drafts" waiting to be published for about a week. I forgot all about it. Since then my flowers have taken off and are even prettier.

Wisdom teeth and Cruises

Kids are so resilient. Their wisdom teeth surgery went fine. Kelsey is back to work today. She has all 4 taken out so she is still pretty sore. Craig only had 2 taken out and he bounced right back and didn't even sleep all day on Monday.

I just realized our cruise is in less than 3 weeks away. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to pack or NOT to pack.

I'm getting excited.

Happy Monday!!!! Thirteen more school days for me. My college kids are already out for the summer.

But . . .

Both of my children are having their wisdom teeth taken out today. My son has his last 2 coming out and my daughter all 4. I pray that they heal quickly and have to endure very little pain.

We took the cover off of the pool this weekend. Yuck!!!!!

We put the pool in 4 years ago but this was the first winter we covered it. Usually, we just let it uncovered and run the filter when the temps are below 32 degrees. But then we have to also add chemicals as needed to keep it clear. We thought we would save electricity and chemical costs if we covered it.

I really thought that the water would be clear and algae would be on the bottom and easy to vacuum up. That is what a lot of people tell me theirs looks like when they uncover.

Not us. . .

Ours looked like nasty, green pond water. Our pool cover is made of a mesh material that lets water run through it. We had a lot of rain and snow all winter and then lots of pollen that apparently went through the top with the rain. So we dumped a ton of pool shock in it and Larry will take a water sample in tomorrow to see what else we need to do to get it ready for swimming. It will probably be too cold for a few more weeks anyway.

This picture was actually about 3 hours after we added shock. So, it doesn't look near as bad as it did.

I hope everyone had a Blessed Happy Mother's Day with their families.

I am the only lucky person in my immediate family that did not have to work. Larry is currently doing a 48 hour shift, Craig worked the 10:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. shift and Kelsey worked the 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. shift.

So, Kelsey was able to enjoy hamburgers at my mom's with most of my brothers and sisters (9 of us in all) and their families. After eating we sat down to wild and fun game of chicken foot. Lots of laughter, accusing each other of cheating, and switching of players. As one player gets tired, there is usually someone new stopping by the house and they take over.

So, a little late greeting for all of you mothers.

Happy Mother's Day.

We all secretly know it is Mother's Day everyday. Sometimes our families forget though. lol

It's Graduation Time

Today is such a special day for us. My son, Craig, is graduating from college with a Graphics Design major. Have any of you noticed that most 4 year degrees now take 4 1/2 or 5 years to complete. I assume that soon a normal college degree will take 5 years. If Craig wouldn't have attended summer school and taken 12 hours between his freshman and sophomore year, he would not be graduating now. He has also taken at least 15 hours each semester.

Craig, I just wanted to let you know how proud of you we are.

Larry said he did a great job. Unfortunately, only a couple of the area businesses attended so only 1 or 2 jobs were offered. I think it is just a sign of our economic times.

Craig is interested in doing freelance work. I hope this summer some will come along.

A Great Slightly Rainy Weekend

We had a very nice camping trip even though it rained and stormed Friday evening. I arrived there at about 4 p.m. and was able to get my things out of my vehicle and into the 5th wheel before the rain began about 5 p.m.

This is our 5th wheel. We really do not rough it. My morning ritual for camping is to get up, make a pot of coffee, and walk around the camp ground drinking my morning coffee. It is so relaxing. So this is what I did on Saturday morning. I made it around one of the loops and stopped back at the rv to get my second cup. Stopped outside the camp next to ours to chat with a man about the weather. He asked if I thought we would get more rain. I told him I was optimistic and that we were not going to get all of the rain on Saturday that we were supposed to. I got about 100 yards down the road and it started pouring. No sprinkling, no warning, just a downpour. So I hurried back to the rv to change into dry clothes.

Then I realized that I had dropped my phone out of my pocket. So, I got a huge umbrella out and retraced my steps. Sure enough, there was my phone lying on the side of the road about where I was walking when the downpour occurred. The man next door was chuckling when he saw me looking like a drowned rat.

The grass was pretty high which usually irritates me. But, this time there were pretty wild flowers growing.

Busy as a Bee

Larry and I are taking the RV (5th wheel) out for the first time this spring this weekend. We are just going about 20-25 miles away to Shoal Bay, a nice Corp of Engineer Park.

Doesn't that look inviting?

I spent Sunday cleaning the inside (ladybugs like to descend upon it during the cold months) and bringing all of the dishes in to run through the dish washer. Larry washed the outside, which was quite a chore. We always have to scrub the top (because we do not have it covered) and the awning (because even though we keep it closed, water runs into it when it rains and it gets yucky.)

We'll have to get groceries tomorrow night and finished packing everything. I'll have to take some hand stitching projects. Click here to see what I am taking with me to work on. I'll have to pack books, magazines, and movies because it is supposed to rain off and on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

The park we are staying at does not have internet hookup so I will have a lot of catching up to do when I get back. See you then.

Sunset and Gardening

It started raining here on Friday afternoon about 2 o'clock. It continued to rain off and on through Saturday morning. It finally stopped and this is the view out my window on Saturday evening.

And a couple of minutes later as the sun was setting. . .

My small raised garden plot.

It is finally starting to look like something.

This is the second planting of lettuce. It looks pretty sad, but hopefully it will perk up after being in the ground for a week or so. The first planting was enjoyed by some hungry animal. I think it was a groundhog because I saw one out in our yard one afternoon. But, we have also had 3 or 4 raccoons run over on the highway by the house so they might have been the culprits. We got a shock fence to put up to keep animals out. I just hope I'm not the one that gets shocked.

Color for the Patio

The town I live in is very small, therefore, there are few businesses, unfortunately. We have a Wal-mart (not a supercenter), a grocery store, a Dollar General, a shoe store, a couple of antique stores, and a flower shop. Yes, we have several gas stations, hair salons, a few restaurant and fast food places, and several banks. That's about it. Oops, we also have a couple of auto part stores, a plumbing store, and a two furniture stores. We do have a small hospital and a medical clinic. It is enough to get by and there are elderly that probably never leave town, unless they need to go to a specialist.

But, if we need anything out of the ordinary, we have a choice to go west 40 miles to Fort Smith or east 40 miles to Russellville. This weekend we headed to Fort Smith to get some flowers to plant in large pots to put on the back patio. There is an awesome store called "Sharums Garden Center" that has beautiful plants that range from 3-4 inches tall in starter pots to large plants that are over 1 foot tall. They have hanging baskets and large pots full of different plants in a variety of colors hat are great for a front porch or a patio.

So we looked to see what types of plants they had in their beautiful patio pots and purchased the same ones separately and smaller plants. Now I have 6 great patio plant pots to spread around the pool and patio.

Entrance Redo

I mentioned in my last post that as I walked through the house I noticed I needed to pick up and redo. Basically, I had left the area empty after I put away the Christmas and winter decorations.

So I swept and dusted and then added a few things to make it look more homey and inviting.

Here was the view looking toward the west this morning as I was getting into the truck to go to work.

This picture is blurry because it was so windy I couldn't hold the camera steady. But, that is the moon, huge and still pretty high in the sky at 7 a.m.

The sun is coming up. It looks like it is still pretty dark but it wasn't really.

I just thought that was pretty cool.

I do have a facebook account but I do not have any information on it and do not use it, even for family. The only reason I opened an account was someone wanted me to view some pictures they had on theirs.

Good Food and Family

We had planned to take our children and their dates to Fuji (an Hibachi Grill) over the Christmas break. We were unable to work around all of our work schedules so we didn't get to go.

We finally had a night where we were all off so we met at Fuji's in Fort Smith last night. I was able to snap a few pictures while we were there but the lights were low so they did not turn out very well.

Tabletop Tuesday - China Cabinet

I finally decided on my China Cabinet. My father made this cabinet for met over 20 years ago. Isn't he wonderful with woodwork. Sometimes I have dishes inside (like now) . . .

And sometime I have my Home Interior Denim Day figurines in it. (Here are just a few of them.)

I usually change the top with the seasons also.

And I change the base top also.

Looking for Spring

"Spring is Here!" At least that is what I posted last week. Since then, we had another short bout with snow. Only a little here but 5-8 inches 25 miles away over on the other side of the ridge. Strange huh!

It is so nice outside today that I decided to take a walk around the yard looking for signs of spring.

Not sure what these are. They were planted here when we moved here. I'll have to pay closer attention this year when/if they bloom.

Wild onions. They seem to grow everywhere.

Moss grows almost anywhere here also. It is a wooded area and stays damp, even in the gravel.

Lots of pine saplings growing naturally. I'm not sure what we'll do with these.

That is actually a tadpole in the pond. Cool, huh! You may be able to click on the picture to enlarge.

Lots of greenery but only a couple of flowers. Hopefully, there's more to come.

The trees are budding.

The buzzards are flying over.

Lots of signs that spring is on it's way.

It's Snowing

Well, it really did happen. But we just got a dusting.Two hours northwest of us, they have 7-8 inches already. They are at a higher elevation. We got about an inch (I live on a ridge) and it has started snowing again now. We are under a watch until 7 p.m. I don't have to worry about going anywhere as it is spring break next week.

This is what I call ugly snow. I went to church this morning and as I drove down the ridge, there was a noticable difference in snowfall. There usually is. Hardly any on the ground or cars sitting out.

Well, it's time to go clean the kitchen again. It is never ending. Then down to the sewing room.

Tablescape Thursday--Spring is Here!

I told you yesterday that I found my box of Spring decorations that has been MIA for 6 years. Is that even possible if you don't even think about having it?

I decided to take most of the items and form a tablescape. I started by looking for a tablecloth that felt "springy" to me. I knew I had a mauve one but could not find it. I did run across a pastel colored baby blanket that would fit the bill perfectly. But . . . when I put it on the table, I didn't like how the dishes looked around it. So I decided to fold it in half and make a tea time table setting for two.

This one reminds me of a cross between the "Mad Hatter" and "White Rabbit" in "Alice in Wonderland". Kind of vicious looking.

I Found It!

I don't know why I put off getting a haircut until I can't stand it any more. My son was blessed with cowlicks and I never knew where he got them from until a couple of years ago when I had my hair cut super short. The beautician used the clippers on my neck line and ever since then as soon as it starts growing out, my hair goes every which way. It was then that I realized he must have inherited them from me. Lucky him.

After my hair cut I dropped by the Dollar Tree and couldn't resist getting a few Easter bunnies.

That helped me to remember to look in the garage for my box of Spring decorations. I have been living in this house for 6 years and have just realized that I have not seen these decorations since we moved in. So . . . I went to the garage and after checking out a couple of other boxes, there it was.

When I opened it up, I had a few surprises--things I didn't remember buying.

Table Top Tuesday

This picture has been in our family for over 15 years. I think it is just adorable and have moved it to 3 or 4 different places in my home. But no matter where I put it, the dog figurine goes with it. At this time, it is sitting on the top of my black roll top desk in my bedroom.

I think the dog figurine looks really sad. The dog in the picture looks very content and loved.

Lazy Day Sunday

I have been under the weather for the last couple of days so I didn't get my house cleaned and things re-arranged like I planned to. I also didn't get the bathroom chair recovered. Hopefully, I'll feel better later this week and can get things done.

I have had a hard time letting go of Christmas this year. As I look around the house, I am still finding signs of Christmas. This is the top of my antique treadle sewing machine cabinet in my bedroom.

This is actually Kelsey's ceramic doll. I didn't really have anything else to put here so I decided to keep it out until I can find just the right thing to put in its place. The table topper is also Christmas. I am planning a spring topper right now to take it's place.

I decided I would put out my ceramic rabbits in this spot. But, I realized last night that I'm not sure where they are. I asked my husband if I had a box of decorations in the garage and he said he didn't know. It is dark now and I don't want to dig around in the garage at this time of night. So maybe I'll remember to look for them tomorrow.

Outdoor Wednesday

I had a dinner date with a couple of friends yesterday so I didn't get home until dark and couldn't take pictures for Outdoor Wednesday. Then as I was looking at a picture for my sewing blog, I noticed a picture that I had taken Monday evening.

As I walked out my back door, I noticed there was a turkey buzzard sitting on the rock wall ledge. Of course, when I got back with my camera, it flew off. Then I wanted to get a picture of how close to the house and how low they were flying. I guess they can sense the presence of people because they immediately flew higher. I guess away from danger. They really are ugly birds, but I am amazed at how big they are. I don't know where the pink came from. I didn't notice it when I was taking the picture. But the sun was shining so brightly that I couldn't see what I was taking. I did get a few of the birds flying over.

Tabletop Tuesday - Kitchen

It's been quite awhile since I participated in Tabletop Tuesday(or anything else). So I decided to quit being so lazy and go take some pictures.

I started a post but then realized it was too late and not enough light in the room to take a decent picture.

So I ventured off into the kitchen and took a picture of one of my favorite groupings. It is very simple but I have such little counter space that I try not to fill it up.

This framed art is on the same counter over about a foot. It helps hide the plug in. The frame is from Dollar Tree and the flowers are embroidered on felt. I was trying out my new sewing machine and was about to throw this practice piece away when I though, "Hey, I could frame that and put it in my kitchen."

A New Look for an Old Chair

A Beautiful Sunny Day

Thank you for your kind words about Molly. It is truly appreciated.

It has been a beautiful sunny day today with temperatures in the low 50's. I went to Fort Smith, which is an hour trip. The drive was so nice. Warm sun coming the window.

After I was home for a little bit, I suddenly realized that it was so nice outside I could go walk. From April to November of last year, I walked 1-2 miles every day. It was great and I felt great. Well, I blew it this winter. I only walked/jogged a mile today because I could feel my muscles working and don't want to get sore.

I hope tomorrow is warm and sunny, at least for part of the day, so I can walk again.

Saying Goodbye

Usually I think and contemplate what I am going to blog about. Do I have a Metamorphosis Monday post or a Outdoor Wednesday, etc. I put quite a bit of thought in it.

But . . .

last night, something just told me to talk about our dear dog, Molly, and how she adopted us.

This morning, Craig came to me and said that Molly had not eaten the food he put out for her and asked if I had seen her. I told him that I did not get home until after dark the night before so I had not seen her. He went out to go to school and looked over in the flower bed and found her. She looked very peaceful so we guess she died in her sleep.

Last night, something just told me to talk about Molly.

Goodbye, Molly.

Needless, to say, we are sad here "at home on pine ridge" today.

I'm not an animal lover. I know, I know. It's not that I don't like them, I have just never been a big lover of animals. We always had a dog growing up and I liked having them around but I don't ever remember playing with them much. (I guess with 8 brothers and sisters I always had someone to entertain me.)

This is Molly.

Molly is our dog, we think. We did not buy Molly. She was not given to us. We like to say that Molly adopted us.

Before moving into our current home 6 years ago, we lived on 40+ acres. We always had cows and I loved watching the little calves frolicking in the pasture. We also had poultry houses. About the time we started building the poultry houses this stray dog started coming around. My husband didn't pay much attention for awhile because we lived by the landfill (city dump) and we figured someone dumped another dog. But she stayed around and stayed around so my husband started putting food out. Slowly she befriended my husband and then the rest of us. That was at least 10 years ago. She is still hanging out with us.

See all of the gray. She was gray when she adopted us. We don't know how old she is. We do know that she has been beaten in her life. For years after she came around, any time we picked anything up (water hose, newspaper, stick, etc.) she would cower away from us. So sad. She is no longer afraid of us or anyone that comes to our home. But she is terrified of storms and gun shots and fireworks. She is an outside dog but my son often leaves the garage door open 6 or 7 inches so she can come in when it rains or when it is cold. She has a doghouse, with a light for heat, on our back patio. Sometimes she uses it, sometimes she doesn't.

I know Molly is very old and there has been a couple of times this winter that I thought we were going to lose her. And . . . I was very sad. So, maybe I am becoming an animal lover after all.

Late Valentine's Display

Metamorphosis Monday

I spent part of my Sunday morning picking up, rearranging, and putting away what little Valentine Decorations I had out. This step ladder belongs to my Larry's grandmother that used to live with us. I was using it at Christmas to put up decorations and decided to use it as a decoration piece.

After Christmas, I put some snowmen on it for a winter display. Then I put a red vase and a few other decorative items on it for Valentines day. Unfortunately, I forgot to take pictures.

Today I changed it again and now it looks like this.

I guess I could give it a coat of paint so it would match better with the rest of the room decor.

My Teaching Career

A comment was left asking me about my teaching career so I decided to blog my story.

My husband attended St. Joseph Catholic School as a child. I attended St. Benedict's Catholic School as a child. The difference in the schools, that I only realized as an adult, was the St.Joseph was a private school that charged tuition. St. Benedict's was a part of the public school system. Instead of school beginning at 8 or 8:30 in the morning, we went to school between 7 and 7:30 a.m. During this time we attended Mass and had our religion classes. I didn't realize it then, but we had the best of both worlds. We received our religious education and there was no tuition charged.

When my son was in 2nd or 3rd grade, I attended Mass with the school one morning. I tiny whisper told me "You, too, could be a teacher." I had just completed my Associates Degree in Accounting and changed my major to education. When I finished school, I interviewed at two public schools and St. Joseph School. I was hired by St. Joseph and I know without a doubt that that was where I needed to be. I taught for 6 1/2 years and when my principal resigned was asked to take his place. The only reason I agreed to be principal was because it was the school that I held near to my heart and I knew I was needed. During the next few years, I received my Master's Degree in Administration.

Unfortunately, the stress that comes with running a small, private school (you are basically a superintendent responsible for all employees, funding, etc.) paid a toll on my health and after a few years of sleeping very little and the endless worry, I made the decision that it was time to go back in the classroom as a teacher.

At that time, I have 1 child in college and another starting in the fall. I felt I needed an increase in pay to help support my children during their years in college. Yes, I do spoil my children, but I can't stand the thought of them finishing school with students loans. I feel like that puts them a step behind as they finish college, look for jobs, settle down in a home and start a family.

Both of my children do have scholarships and are working hard to keep them, but their scholarships are not enough to pay for everything.

It was very hard to walk out of St. Joseph School last June 15 when my final contract was over. It was and still is hard to drive past the school and know it is being run by a new principal. But, I was told by a wise former principal that "You have made the decision to leave. Now, you need to walk out and let the new person run the school. If you keep returning, the school will not be theirs and you will get in the way."

So I have walked away. It has been hard. But I do still support the school by attending fund raisers. I love the fact that the teachers there now can truly be friends (as I am not their boss any longer). I stay in touch with them, they ask for advice from time to time, and I can still give them guidance in their teaching and working with the children.

The hardest part is seeing the children and knowing that I am not that central role model in their lives. Most of them still smile and hug me when they see me, but it's just a little different.

But, now I have a new family at my current public school. During the past week or so, some of the students have begun to ask me if I can be their teacher again next year. As most teachers know, this is high praise. This is when you know that no matter how tough you are on them, that they appreciate you and know you are a good teacher and someone they can trust and depend on.

Show and Tell Friday

Last Saturday, Larry and I attended a fund raiser for the small Catholic School where I taught for 6 1/2 years and was principal for the last 3 1/2 years. It was an annual Mardi Gras dinner and dance which was started 11 years ago. The evening starts with appetizers from 6 to 7 and a dinner and dance from 7 to 11. The highlight of the evening (and the money maker) is a grand silent auction. Each year it gets bigger and better.

This year I won the following item from the silent auction.

This item was made by our parish priest. He is an accomplished welder.

Last year he made a beautiful sculpture that was about three times the size as the one I won this year but was made out of the same material. I called it the Risen Christ because it looked like a man was rising from the center of a flower. I would have bid on it but the starting bid was $300 by a lady that was not attending the fund raiser. I think I was the only person attending the event that liked the sculpture. It was was too contemporary, I guess.

But, I like things that are unusual and one of a kind. And the sculptures he makes are both.

Outdoor Wednesday

The snow has finally gone but it is still brutally cold.

It is supposed to be in the upper 50's by the end of the week. This is my sunshine fix until then.

I got the call last night at about 9:30 p.m. The call I was expecting, yet dreaded. What call was that? The one saying we didn't have school again today. Yeah! Another day to sew. Yuck! Another day added on to the end of the school year.

Snow Day

The weather man said we would get snow starting today (Monday) around 4 p.m. Apparently it moved in faster than expected because when I looked out at 11 p.m. Sunday night, it was already snowing. So this morning we woke up to about 5 inches of snow and no school. It stopped snowing about 7 a.m. but we are due to get up to 6 more inches today. Looking out at 10 a.m. it is snowing again. Pretty wet snow. If it dips down to freezing this afternoon and evening the roads are going to be awful tomorrow. But I still enjoy the beauty and stillness that snow brings to our hectic world.

Valentines Giveaway

Hello Blogger Friends,

It's hard to believe that we are in the 2nd month of 2010. It is also hard for me to believe that I started my blog over a month ago.

I decided that I wanted to create something for the Valentine season. (Is it a season?) I have been working in my quilting studio (doesn't that sound chic). This is what I started out with.

No Bake Cookies Recipe

Donatella @ Donatella Style and Trish @ Homemade Quilts by Granny asked for the recipe for the "No Bake Cookies" I pictured last week.

There are many recipes out there but I think this is the one Kelsey used. I think that a lot of candy is like divinity and the weather affects how it turns out.

2 cups sugar
4 Tbsp. cocoa
1/2 cup milk
1 stick butter
3 1/2 cups uncooked oats
1/2 cup peanut butter
1 tsp. vanilla

Mix together sugar, cocoa, milk, and butter. Bring to a boil over high heat. Stir constantly for 1 minute. Take off the heat and add 1 tsp. vanilla. Add oats and peanut butter. Stir well and drop by tablespoons on was paper.

Pretty simple. I know for a fact that she used some type of margarine because she does not live at home and is a frugal shopper. She probably does not even realize what real butter is. We always used margarine when I was growing up. You know large family--penny pinching.

Let me know if yours turn out. I may have to whip up a batch myself today.

Valentine's Snack

Snow and Ice

Well, the ice is finally hitting us. Actually, it sleeted quite a bit last night so I thought we would wake up to a mess. But although the trees were beautiful. the roads were all just wet.

But. as of noon, the sleet is coming down pretty good and I think the temp has hit the freezing mark. My daughter is home and my son is safe at his girlfriend's house. They both have to work tonight so if it keeps this up, I'll be worried. My son may have to call in, he has to cross a mile long bridge. If the roads get bad, that probably won't be a good idea.

I didn't change my mantle around this week so I am going to show my hearth. As I looked through my photos, I realized that they may be blurry. I'm not sure why unless I was shaky. This will probably be the last of my winter decor pics. I will probably take everything down this weekend.

Tabletop Tuesday

As I looked around to see which table top setting I wanted to share, I realized that the majority of decorating items I have are Christmas and/or winter items.

Even though we have been in our home for over 5 years, I feel like we are just now able to redo and fix up. We ripped out the carpet in most of the upstairs, leaving it in our den and office/library. Both of these rooms have pine on the walls and ceilings so we didn't want to add wood flooring. We plan to put tile in the office/library and replacing the carpet in the den with berber.

Anyway, this is the year I plan to purchase and/or make new decor for our formal living area. Right now I have a simple vignette on my sofa table and that is what I am sharing today.

Blue Monday- Things around the House

I always thought I had a lot of blue in my home. But then when I went to look for something to post, I noticed most of my blue things are winter items. I'm planning to let go of my snowman and other winter items and put them up in the next week or so. So, I have a few of those things to show before I store them for another year.

I just heard on the local weather that we have a chance of snow and ice here in Arkansas on Thursday and Friday. I don't mind if I can stay home, but I always worry about having to drive on it.

Metamorphosis Monday

Years ago I sold Home Interiors and Gifts. It was a great way to make extra money while I stayed at home with my children when they were small. I also had the opportunity to purchase my showcase materials at 40% off the normal price.

This is a tree that I made during that time. I know, some say you are not supposed to use artificial plants in your home. But I am allergic to dust mites and am not supposed to have live plants in my home.

The artificial bushes used were sold by Home Interiors. Over the years, they have been washed ump teen times and have shed many leaves. So I decided to purchase some new greenery and add a little color while I was at it.

Now I have to be on the look out for a new planter to sit it in. I'm not sure how I got the white paint on my terra cotta pot. You know, I guess I could always paint it.

I was planning to use it in my living room when I purchased the flowers, but I still have red/burgandy curtains up in there so I put it in my bedroom for awhile.

Hey, I could hide the paint with a figurine.

That solves the problem until I get new living room curtains and decide what type of planter I want to put it in.

Anyone have any suggestions for a planter?

Mantle Party

After the Christmas holidays, I decided that I would like a sleek no fru fru mantle. And I wanted to keep a touch of winter out. What is better this time of year than deer, trees, candlelight, and snowflakes?

Our fireplace extends about 15 feet to the ceiling. It is all rock from floor to ceiling.

I started with a tree from my Christmas decorations and used a few snowflakes and scented pinecones for accents.

I added a set of deer from Home Interiors & Gifts, Inc. I have had these for over 15 years ago. (I do not throw anything away unless it breaks beyond repair.)

I needed an accent to cover a outlet that extends about 1/2 inch below the picture. I turned around and this book was sitting on another tabletop display. I moved it over to the mantle and was amazed at how well the colors on the book cover match the picture.

These candles were purchased at a local flower shop when on sale for 40% off. Once again I added snowflakes for a touch of winter.

Tablescape Thursday

2nd Time Around Tuesday

Many years ago (at least 15 or more) I came across this chair. When I found it at a flea market, it was dirty and the real beauty did not show through, It was a steal for $5. I took it home, cleaned it up, and used it mainly to decorate for many years. It then graced my classroom and I used it for my "read aloud" chair. The students were allowed to sit in it when reading their journal entries aloud to the class.

Oops, I just noticed I haven't cleaned it since it left my classroom. On the next sunny day, I think I need to get out the Murpheys Oil Soap.

This next chair belongs to Mr. Paramedic's grandmother. My son and daughter sat in this chair many a day while they were growing up.

Now, I only allow my stuffed animals and other treasures to sit on it. Not that my son and daughter are not my treasures--they are just a little too big.

Look! It even folds for storage.

Hmmm. I think it needs cleaned too.

Blue Monday -- Really

A Beautiful Sunday Morning

I looked at the window and the sun was peeking through but there was still low fog in the valley off the cliff in my back yard. I went out to see if I could capture the Lord's beauty.

It has been so rainy, dreary, and cold here for the past three weeks. I believe this is actually the first day I have been home and the sun is shining.

Tablescape Thursday

It's that time again. One of the days I look forward to so I can learn and get lots of great ideas to use when decorating my home. It's time for Tablescape Thursday.

I needed some versatile dishes that I could use for almost any season. So I hit the after Christmas sale at Wal-mart and was able to snatch up these white dishes with a gold rim for next to nothing.

I also picked up the gold chargers for next to nothing.

The gold glasses were inherited from Mr. paramedic's grandmother. She recieved them as a gift at her 50th wedding anniversary celebration.

Quilts -- Antique? Vintage? Who knows?

I'm not sure what makes a quilt an antique. Maybe in my spare time (I would have if I didn't enjoy spending my evenings getting a peak at so many blogger's homes.) I should research that.

But I do know that I have 4 quilts that I consider antique. The sad part is I'm not sure where I got some of them. So I'll show you how I have them displayed right now. Some of you may cringe because I do not have them protected from the ladder like I should. I probably need to get some old cotton to put between the rungs of the ladder and the quilts.

This is not the ladder I want to display the quilts on. I want one of the old ones that just lean and have a big space between the rungs. Preferably about 10-12 feet tall so it would cover most of my wall to the high ceilings. I'm on the look out.

This ladder came from my mom and dad's place. I was visiting on Thanksgiving and wanted to display these quilts for the Christmas open house I was participating in. I asked if they had an old ladder and sure enough they did.

Who knows how old it is? It is well weathered. My mom and dad keep things forever so it was probably around when I was a kid.

Now for the quilts . . .

This quilt was hand sewn and quilted by my paternal grandmother. I'm not sure when but I think in the 1920's to 1940's. I never met my grandmother as she died before I was born. But my dad gave this quilt to me. I will always treasure it.

This double wedding ring quilt is amazing. It has some dark stains but otherwise is in very good shape. The blocks are about 1/2 to 3/4 inches square. They are so tiny. The stitches are very tiny also. And to think--no sewing machine.

I think the other three quilts came from my husband's grandmothers but I'm not positive. My mother-in-law said the 2nd one from the bottom looked vaguely familiar so I think it may have come from Mr. Paramedic's maternal grandmother. The bottom one may have come from Mr. Paramedic's paternal grandmother. I think I actually picked the 2nd quilt from a batch of quilts that came from Mr. Paramedic's maternal grandmother's house when she died.
